Guelph Platers

The Guelph Platers were a Canadian ice hockey team from Guelph, Ontario. The team played from 1982 to 1989 in one of the three highest Canadian Junior Hockey League, the Ontario Hockey League ( OHL ).

History

The Guelph CMC 's, which were active in the Southern Ontario Junior A Hockey League ( SOJHL ), were purchased in 1975 by the family Holody which the franchise initially renamed in Guelph Platers Holody and it could play two more years in the SOJHL. After the league was disbanded in 1977, to Guelph joined together with another team in the Ontario Hockey Association Junior "A" League, in which they were represented, the following five years.

Prior to the 1982/83 season the platers were included in the Ontario Hockey League after their request was denied several times in previous years. After each missed the playoffs in their first three OHL seasons, won the Guelph Platers in the 1985/86 season the first J. Ross Robertson Cup as they prevailed in the final against the Belleville Bulls. Thereupon qualified the team for the Memorial Cup, which they also won. In the final Guelph beat the Hull Olympiques 5-2. Subsequently, however, the platers were also no longer on the first playoff round, so that the franchise was founded in 1989 by Owen Sound, Ontario, relocated, where it was active as Owen Sound Platers in the OHL from now on.
