Himberg is a market town in the Vienna Basin with 6869 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Wien-Umgebung in Lower Austria.

Geography

Himberg is located a few kilometers south of Vienna, in the industrial area in Lower Austria. The municipality is crossed by the cold aisle.

The area of ​​the municipality covers 47.63 square kilometers. 5.82 percent of the area is forested.

History

In ancient times, the area was part of the province of Pannonia. The first settlements on the territory of today Himbergs came from the Teutons and Romans. The region gained by the Roman legion camp Vindobona, Carnuntum ALANOVA and important. The name Himberg first appears in 1100 AD in connection with the Battle of Lechfeld in 955 against the Hungarians, when the region went to the Babenberg Margrave.

A Babenberg, namely Marquardus de Hintperg, the community derives its name. Later, the spelling of Hintberg about Himperch in Himberg changed. The Babenberg Duke Frederick II the Quarrelsome acquired in 1243 Himberg, including the castle and all its possessions.
