Hohenpeißenberg

Hohenpeißenberg is a community in the Upper Bavarian district of Weilheim -Schongau. The former mining town located in the center of the Pfaff angle. Dominated landscape is the place through the nearly 1000 meters high Hohenpeißenberg, whose summit fairly centrally located in the local area and offers a beautiful view of the Alps. The Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption is a famous pilgrimage site and popular tourist destination. On the mountain there is now a radio tower and a meteorological observatory, which is considered the oldest mountain weather station in the world.

Geography

Hohenpeißenberg situated in the Bavarian Oberland, in the foothills of the Alps. There is only the district Hohenpeißenberg.

The highest point of the resort is the summit of the 988 meter high High Peissenberg. It is named for its breathtaking panoramic view and the " Bavarian Rigi " or more rarely " mons parnanssus ". He is considered the most beautiful mountain panorama of Bavaria and is a popular destination. Early epithet of the mountain were " mons doctus " because of the scholarship, because of meteorological research. The majority of the population live on the south side of the mountain, another smaller part is on the west side ( districts: Hetten and Buchschorn ), a small proportion of the population is on the north side and east side.

The place is located on the left bank of bunting. The bunting flows past below the south side of the village, in a valley called " Schnalz ".

History

History

1514 residents built on the Hohenpeißenberg a chapel. From the chapel Schongau was a ducal nurses bring a carved mother of God figure there. This figure quickly gained a reputation as a miraculous image, a pilgrimage developed. At the beginning of the 17th century because of a second church was built ( the Sanctuary ), whereby the current double church was built. The chapel is located west of the church tower, the Sanctuary itself east of it. The ensemble gives the top of the mountain its distinctive silhouette.

Time of the Augustinian canons

In the course of administrative reform in Bavaria, was born with the congregation of 1818, the current community. Previously, the local area belonged to Peiting. Hohenpeißenberg belonged to Rentamt Munich and the court Schongau of the Electorate of Bavaria.

The first phase of the old, historic school building on the mountain, was built after the time of the monks from 1882 to 1883.

Mining

Religion

The majority of the population is Catholic, at the last census in 1987, 85.1 percent Roman Catholic and 10.7 percent were Protestant. Dialect

Traffic

The main street was formerly on the north side of the mountain, and served mainly the salt transport. Also on the south side of the High Peissenberg is a small railway station on the railway line Weilheim -Schongau. On this route run every hour DMUs Bayerische Regiobahn. Originally, it was the desire of the community Hohenpeißenberg to build the station at Schächen, but this would not have been possible because of the strong slope of Peißenberg. Therefore, the station was built at a lower altitude, on the southern point. From 1937, the air shaft at the station had its own railway siding.
