Jackson County (West Virginia)

Jackson County is a county located in the state of West Virginia in the United States. In the 2000 census, the county had 28,000 inhabitants and a population density of 23 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Ripley.

Geography

The County is located in western West Virginia, bordered to the northwest of Ohio, where the limit by the Ohio River is formed, and has an area of 1206 square kilometers, of which one square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Wood County, Wirt County, Roane County, Kanawha County, Putnam County, Mason County and Meigs County ( Ohio).

History

Jackson County was formed on March 1, 1831 from parts of Kanawha County, Mason County and Wood County. It was named after Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the United States.

According to the census of 2000, there were 28,000 people in Jackson County. Of these, 328 people were living in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 11,061 households and 8,207 families. The population density was 23 people per square kilometer.
