Summers County, West Virginia

Summers County is a county located in the state of West Virginia in the United States. In 2000, the County had 12,999 inhabitants and a population density of 14 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Hinton.

Geography

The County is located in southern West Virginia, is about 30 km from the border with Virginia and has an area of 952 square kilometers, of which 17 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Greenbrier County, Monroe County, Mercer County, Raleigh County and Fayatte County.

History

Summers County was formed on February 27, 1871 from parts of Fayette, Greenbrier, Mercer and Monroe County. It was named after George W. Summers, a US-based lawyers.

According to the census of 2000, there were 12,999 people in Summers County. Of these, 157 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 5,530 households and 3,754 families.
