Lincoln County (West Virginia)

Lincoln County is a county located in the state of West Virginia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Hamlin.

Geography

The County is located in the southwest of West Virginia, is in the northwest about 45 miles from Ohio, in the southwest about 40 miles from Kentucky and has an area of 1136 square kilometers, of which three square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Putnam County, Kanawha County, Boone County, Logan County, Mingo County, Wayne County and Cabell County.

History

Lincoln County was formed on February 23, 1867 from parts of Boone, Cabell, Kanawha and Putnam County. It was named after Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Lincoln County 22.108 people in 8,664 households and 6,532 families. The population density was 20 people per square kilometer.
