James Castle (politician)

James Nathan Castle ( * May 23, 1836 in Shefford, Quebec, Canada, † January 2, 1903 in Stillwater, Minnesota ) was an American politician. Between 1891 and 1893 he represented the state of Minnesota in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

James Castle attended the public schools of his Canadian home. In 1862 he moved to Afton in Minnesota. There he worked as a teacher. In addition, he completed a law degree in Canada has already begun. After qualifying as a lawyer, he began to work in his new profession. In 1865 he moved his residence and his law firm to Stillwater. In 1866 he became district attorney in Washington County as the successor of his deceased brother. In 1868, he was attorney for the municipality Stillwater.

Politically Castle was a member of the Democratic Party. In the years 1868, 1878 and 1882, he was elected to the Minnesota Senate. In the congressional elections of 1890 he was in the fourth electoral district of Minnesota in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Samuel Snider on March 4, 1891. Dar he resigned in 1892 to run again, Castle could pass in Congress until March 3, 1893 only one legislative period. During his time in the U.S. House of Representatives, he was chairman of the Committee on Mileage.

After retiring from Congress, James Castle withdrew from politics. In the years until his death on January 2, 1903, he again worked as a lawyer. He was buried in his hometown of Stillwater.
