John P. Hale

John Parker Hale ( born March 31, 1806 in Rochester, New Hampshire, † November 19, 1873 in Dover, New Hampshire) was an American politician who represented the state of New Hampshire in both chambers of the U.S. Congress.

After his graduation he studied law. From 1832 to 1834 he was a member of the House of Representatives from New Hampshire. Then he was there from 1834 to 1841 Attorney General. In 1843 he was elected as a deputy of the Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served until 1845.

In the years 1847-1853 he was at first. For Democrats, from 1848 as a member of the spun-off from these Free Soil Party, Member of the Senate Here he distinguished himself as one of the fiercest opponents of the Mexican-American War. In 1852 he stood as a candidate in the U.S. presidential election, but it reached only 4.9 % of the votes and was awarded not one elector.

From 1855 to 1865 he was again in the Senate, first as a member of the Free Soil Party and after their association with the Republican Party since 1856 as a Republican.

From 1865 to 1870 he was ambassador to Spain. He then returned to New Hampshire, where he died in 1873.
