Jonava

Listen jonava / i ( German: Janau )? Is a city in Lithuania. It is the seat of the Rajongemeinde Jonava and in this an urban office district.

Location and population

The core city Jonava located about 30 km northeast of the second largest city of Kaunas, near the mouth of the šventoji into the Neris river. In the self-governing community live 52,000 people, of which only 35,000 live in the urban core Jonava (2004 ). 1893 lived 3069 Jews (92 % of the 3350 population ) in the city. 1941 were the Jews Jonavas 80 % of the population.

History

The town was founded around 1740, when Dominink Kossakowski for himself a farm on the Neris and Varnaka built and lived there. His father's name was Jonas Mykolas Kosakovskis (hence the Christian name, such as " Johann city "). 1750 built the first wooden church Marijona Kosakovskienė that burned later. 1750 gave the king of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania Friedrich August II of Marija Kosakovskienė a privilege establishing the town Jonava. After that, the first city inhabitants arrived to the place of neighbor villages.

1777, there were 40 Jewish families and in 1784 already 59 families. 1793 was built at the present town of Jonava the Catholic Church of the Holy Apostle James, and afterwards the monastery Jonava. 1832 the monastery was closed. The city Jonava concerned the polonization. 1830, preached in the church mostly Polish and Lithuanian only sometimes.

1864 was the place Jonava the municipal law. In 1893 they built the first mills on the Varnutė. After the great fire in 1904 the building of the monastery was sold to the church. 1827 Trinitarians from Jonava were expelled by the government. In the monastery could be down to 1894 soldiers.

In the city, the timber industry and the craft developed. 1950 Jonava became the center of Rajons Jonava. In Soviet times, was erected the district court Jonava, which comes under the District Court of Kaunas.

In 1996, the new coat of arms was confirmed by the Lithuanian President Algirdas Brazauskas.

Culture

The Cultural Jonava ( JKC ) with its branches in the Rajongemeinde organizes most of the events of the city. The center in the main building has two halls. The main hall has 650 seats and the stage is 254 m² in size. The Culture House has its own theater, music groups, choirs and dance groups.

Every year is Jonava the scene of a large and traditional midsummer festival, as the city is also named after St. John. Jonava is 23-24. June declared a " John republic." Sports

In 1966, the sports school was founded. In 2002, the school sports center Jonava was reorganized. The city has two stages. The newer Central Stadium Jonava located next to the St. John Valley and the hard Altstadion on the left bank of the Neris River. Education

Around 1782 there was already a parish school founded by Marians. 1820 a school is mentioned. After 13 years it was attended by 40 students. 1820, the school was closed.

1867 they founded in Jonava a primary school ( the language of instruction was Russian). 1871 moved to the elementary school from Rumšiškės; the craft was newly built. In 1919 a one Progymnasium.

Traffic

Jonava is on the main road A 6, which runs as part of the European Route 262 between Kaunas and the Latvian border with Zarasai.
