The Junior Euro Song Contest ( JESC ) is a variant of the Euro Vision Song Contest (ESC ) for young singers below the Esc age limit of 16 years. So far, there were at the event no German -speaking part, also has no German-language channels broadcast the events. Up to and including 2006, the JESC participants had to be at least eight years old, 2007, the limit was increased to ten years. The songs have to be kept in the national language of the artist. Model for the competition was the Scandinavian Melodi Grand Prix Nordic, which took place in a Danish- Norwegian-Swedish co-production in 2006. In the Danish radio a similarly configured competition took place in 2001 ( only national). The European Broadcasting Union ( EBU) took up the idea and gave Denmark the contract to host the first Junior Euro Song Contest.

The public broadcaster of Denmark and Norway withdrew in 2006 withdrew from the competition. The reason for this, the children were exposed to a strong pressure has been discussed controversially. Together with Swedish television, they returned to the old MGP Nordic. In Sweden, the private broadcaster TV4 took over the broadcasting of the JESC, in the other two countries was not an independent station was interested in participating. The British broadcaster ITV reached with the JESC in recent years, no satisfactory audience and was therefore - also from 2005 - no longer interested in an appearance. A year later also withdrew Spain, which no country in the Big Five longer participates in the competition.
