Kirs, Russia

Kirs (Russian Кирс ) is a town in Kirov Oblast (Russia) with 10,420 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ). The city is the administrative center of Rajons Verkhnyaya Kama ( Upper Kama ) and is located about 220 km northeast of the Oblasthauptstadt Kirov near the mouth of the river Kirs in the Vyatka, a right tributary of the Kama.

History

Kirs was created in 1729 as a workers' settlement with the construction of an iron foundry through merchant Grigory Vyazemsky. The place was named after the river, whose name originally comes from the Komi language and there " steep bank " means. In the 1860s, the foundry was bought by the state and significantly expanded, but Kirs was not until 1965 that the city law.
