Kombo

Kombo ( spelling variant combo) was a small kingdom in what is now The Gambia, at the mouth of the Gambia River.

The present-day districts Kombo Central, Kombo East, Kombo Kombo North and South in the West Coast region refer to this kingdom. She will be still spoken by the Region combo.

Location

It was north of the river and west by the Atlantic Ocean, south of the kingdom Elinkin on the Casamance River and east limits of the kingdom Foni. The land is flat and covered on the banks of the Gambia with mangrove forest.

History

In the 19th century combo was one of nine Mandinka kingdoms on the south bank of the Gambia and controlled the mouth of the river to the Atlantic Ocean.

1816 sold the ruler of Kombo St. Mary's Iceland to Captain Alexander Grant to build a British base there. Later, all the land was sold in July 1840, December 1950 and May 1953, the British, which they called from now on British combo. British combo was later in Kombo-St. Mary Area (also Kombo St. Mary ) renamed the region is today still known by that name.
