Kondrovo, Kaluga Oblast

Kondrowo (Russian Кондрово ) is a city in Kaluga Oblast (Russia) with 16 672 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city lies about 40 km northwest of Kaluga Oblasthauptstadt at the Schanja, a left tributary of the Ugra river system of the Volga.

Kondrowo is the administrative center of the Rajons Dzerzhinsky.

History

The village was founded in the early 16th century on lands which the voivode Dmitri Kondyrjow had been overridden for merits in the campaign from 1500 to 1501 against the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and was named after this Kondyrjowo.

1790 built here a paper mill, which was known for its high-quality products at the end of the 19th century. From the 1840s, today's local form of the name came into use.

1938, the city charter was granted.

During World War II Kondrowo was occupied on 9 October 1941 by the German Wehrmacht and recaptured on 19 January 1942 by the Western Front of the Red Army in the Rzhev - Wjasmaer operation.
