Zhukov, Kaluga Oblast

Zhukov (Russian Жуков ) is a city in Kaluga Oblast (Russia) with 12,131 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 90 km north-west of Kaluga Oblasthauptstadt on the left bank of the Protva, a left tributary of the opening into the Volga River Oka.

Zhukov is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

The town was founded in the early 17th century. Since 1656 he called himself in connection with the opening of an ironworks as this Ugodski Zavod.

After the closure of the plant in 1780, the village became a trading center of the circle ( Ujesds ) Maloyaroslavets. In the 19th century it lost its regional economic importance gradually; Main occupation of the population was now the craft (for example, carpentry and jeweler crafts). Culture and sights
