Kwassi Klutse

Kwassi Klutse ( born July 29, 1945 in Agbélouvé ) was 1996-1999 Prime Minister of Togo.

Political career

He studied in France and was since November 1995 as Minister of Planning member of the government of longtime authoritarian President Gnassingbe Eyadema ruling. His predecessor as Prime Minister Edem Kodjo stepped back as the president again wanted a trusted person at the head of the government, this had Eyadéma party Rassemblement du peuple togolais (RPT ) to gain in parliamentary by-elections some seats which won her the parliamentary majority and thus the appointment of a prime minister from the ranks of RPT enabled.

From 20 August 1996 until his resignation on 21 May 1999 Klutse was prime minister. In 1997 he was appointed to the Politburo of the ruling party RPT. After Eyadema of numerous allegations of manipulation unshaded re-election as president in June 1998, was asked to form a new government, which included no representatives of the opposition more Klutse. In the parliamentary elections in March 1999, his party had won 79 of 81 seats in parliament, said the elections were largely boycotted by the opposition and the voter turnout was estimated to be only 10%.
