The La Gomera Airport is the airport of belonging to Spain Canary Island of La Gomera. In the municipality of Alajeró located, it is 34 km away from the capital, San Sebastián de la Gomera.

Airlines and destinations

The airport serves domestic flights mainly to the neighboring island of Tenerife; usually carried out by the regional airline Binter Canarias. The routes are unprofitable and are maintained only on the basis of political pressure.

For international flights, the start and runway is too short, which is why air travelers land predominantly on Tenerife. Most tourists arrive on the southern airport of Tenerife, the flight to La Gomera but is handled by the airport in the north of Tenerife. Therefore, it is closer, cheaper and usually faster to get through the port of Los Cristianos by ferry or fast ferry to La Gomera.

In the first four months of 2007 10.720 passengers were handled in La Gomera, about 2.8 % more than the same period in 2006.

History

In the 1950s, the private airfield El Revolcadero was built on La Gomera. He was Alajero south at an altitude of 170 meters above sea level and only just 300 meters from the coast, had a start and runway with the direction of 09-27, and was released on July 15, 1959 for private air traffic to its owner and used as Notflugplatz and the base of the pest. 1962 was considered problematic because of the medical care of the island the opportunity to build on the island of a new airport. It remained for a long time. However, since there was a new high-speed ferry in the 1970s and the Tenerife South Airport resumed his ministry, the project was finally discarded.

An agreement between Spain and the Government of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands was on July 27, 1987, but signed, which enabled the construction of an airport. The rather rough and hochgebirgige island and the protection of the National Park Garajonay made it difficult to find a suitable airport area. The project development and setting of the location on a plateau in the island community Alajeró, two kilometers from the old airfield El Revolcadero away, lasted until the end of 1990. Four years later, work on the start and runway and the apron were completed. In April 1995, the operating company AENA S. A. completed the construction work. The Works of the terminal was awarded, which was inaugurated in 1999. The two-storey airport building has in its architecture typical Canarian trains. The main entrance is a replica of the door of Asunción Church, which is in the island's capital, San Sebastián.

Opened in June 1999, the airport of La Gomera is now the most modern of the Canary Islands.
