History

After 1962, trying to find a suitable area for an airport on the island usually quite impassable, began in 1968 with the construction of the airstrip with apron and passenger terminal. There the coastal area Llano de los Cangrejos was selected in the northeast of the island near the capital, Valverde. Then the radio technology was applied and the airport officially opened on 12 December 1972. 1977 had to be extended, the start and runway. Extensive renovations and the construction of a new tower in 1990 was necessary. In the two years following the start and runway was extended again. During this time the current terminal was built.
