Liliw, Laguna

Liliw is a Philippine municipality in the province of Laguna. It is one of Highland communities in the Southern Province.

Liliw is known for its cold water spring resorts, native homemade sweets and a substantial footwear industry that competes with that of Marikina City.

Geography

Liliw is located 17 kilometers from Santa Cruz at the foot of Banahaws. Liliw has a land area of 88.5 km ². The municipality is bordered on the north by Santa Cruz, on the northeast by Magdalena, on the west by Nagcarlan and on the south by Dolores, Quezon Province.

History

Liliw was founded in 1571 by Gat Tayaw. During the whole period of Spanish rule, the name Liliw was used, this was changed by the Americans in Lilio because Lilio was easier to pronounce for them. By resolution of the Municipal Council on June 11, 1965 Liliw was again declared as the official name.
