Limone sul Garda

Limone sul Garda is an Italian city on the western shore of Lake Garda in the province of Brescia, in Lombardy, located on the Gardesana.

Limone sul Garda has 1169 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). The original fishing village is now a tourist town with many modern hotels and apartments. In lime are the two ports of Porto Vecchio and Porto Nuovo.

The name Limone probably is not derived, as is often assumed, from the surrounding lemon groves, but from the Latin word limes (border). Because once ended in Limone the Republic of Venice. Nevertheless, there is mainly the " lemons " image marketed.

About 10,000 tourists a day during the season to Limone. For them, large parking lots were set up on the outskirts, because in the old town no car traffic is possible.

San Benedetto Church

The San Benedetto ( St. Benedict ) Church in 1691 built according to plans by Andreas Pernis on the remains of an ancient Roman basilica. The interior decorated with paintings by Andrea Celesti from the 15th century and a crucifix made ​​of boxwood from the 18th century. There are four marble altars and stucco:

  • The main altar (1724 ) comes from Christoforo Benedetti from Brentonico. The altarpiece ( 1574 ) shows the Cross of Jesus and comes from the Veronese masters Battista Angelo.
  • The altar of St.. Sacrament (1699 ) is by Silvestro and the brothers Ogna from Rezzato. The altarpiece depicts the Last Supper ( artist unknown ).
  • The altar of St.. Rosary (1704 ) is also of Christoforo Benedetti. In the altarpiece, the Madonna and Child, the mystery of the Holy Rosary, St. Anthony and St. James of Compostela shown ( artist unknown ).
  • The altar of St. Anthony of Padua ( 1696 ) is made of marble and stucco. The painting, created in 1847 by Antonio Moro from Limone is dedicated to St. Anthony, St. Francis and the Holy Family.
  • The altar with the Holy Cross (1721 ) is also a work of Cristoforo Benedetti. The baroque wooden cross is carved from boxwood and of unknown origin.

San Rocco Chapel

The Chapel of San Rocco was built in the mid 16th century. During the First World War, the chapel was badly damaged. It is used today every now and then for fundraisers. Notable works of art are not present.

Sons and daughters of the town

Daniele Comboni (1831-1881), priest, missionary and founder of the Order, who advocated for the African missionary, since 2003 saint of the Catholic Church.

Others

In 1980, scientists discovered among the inhabitants of a mutant molecule of apolipoprotein in the blood. This reduces the disease risk of atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases.
