List of Kentucky state parks

The U.S. state of Kentucky has 52 state parks (November 2010). The state parks in Kentucky are administered by the Kentucky Department of Parks.

History

The General Assembly created the Kentucky 1924, the State Parks Commission to preserve scenic areas and important historical sites. The Commission selected seven sites as potential state parks. 1924 Cumberland State Park, Pine Mountain State Resort Park today, was founded. After the Second World War, the park system was considerably expanded.

Organization

The state parks in Kentucky are administered by the Kentucky Department of Parks. The Department divides the park into three categories:

  • Resort farm with a lodge, restaurant and tourist accommodation
  • Recreational parks often have camping sites and serve as recreational areas for hiking, fishing, golf or other leisure activities
  • Historic Sites preserve some centuries old historical sites.

Currently, there are 17 resort parks, more than in any other U.S. state, 24 Recreational Parks and 11 Historic Sites. Add to this the Breaks Interstate Park, which is managed jointly with the state of Virginia.
