Luxembourg national football team

The Luxembourg national football team was founded in 1908 and joined in 1910 the world football governing body FIFA on. The team is organized by the Fédération Luxembourgeoise du Football ( FLF ) and trained since 2010 by Luc Holtz.

In the FIFA world rankings, the team occupies the space 123 (as of December 19, 2013 ).

In Luxembourg, the football is the most popular sport. The most famous players of the Luxembourg team are Vic Nurenberg, Nico Brown, Louis Pilot, François counter, Armin Krings, Guy Hellers and Jeff Strasser.

In qualifying for the 2004 European Championships the national team managed to win and not a single goal. Even with the qualification for World Cup 2006 Luxembourg remained no points despite five goals scored. Low points in the history were the years 1980-1985, in which the selection of the country had to take 35 defeats in a row and 13 October 2004. On this day Luxembourg lost in the 2006 World Cup qualifiers at home to Liechtenstein 0:4. But already scarce defeats were to be celebrated at the big football nations such victories. For example, the team lost in 1990 against Germany in the European Championship qualifier with only about 2:3, and in 2007 against the Netherlands 0-1. Czech Republic in 1995 defeated 1-0 with a goal by Guy Hellers. On 13 October 2007, the team succeeded in Homel 's 1-0 victory against Belarus after more than twelve years back a victory in a European Championship qualifier ( last on 6 September 1995 against Malta). The goal came Fons Leweck in the fourth minute of injury time. A sensation was the Luxembourg team with a 2-1 win on 10 September 2008 in a World Cup qualifier in Zurich against the hochfavorisierte Swiss national team.

In qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil Luxembourg met Azerbaijan, Israel, Northern Ireland, Portugal and Russia. Against Northern Ireland Luxembourg had never played. Except for a victory on October 8, 1961 against Portugal in qualifying for the 1962 World Cup Luxembourg had still can not win a game against one of those teams. With two draws against Azerbaijan and a win and a draw against Northern Ireland Luxembourg was able to achieve the best result in a World Cup qualifier since the introduction of three points for a win with 6 points. For an entry into the World Cup finals or the playoffs, it nevertheless was not enough.
