Manturovo, Kostroma Oblast

Manturowo (Russian Мантурово ) is a city in Russia with 17,479 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) since 1958.

Location

Manturowo is located in Kostroma region on the river Unscha, about 650 km north-east of Moscow and 260 km from the regional center of Kostroma. The nearest town is Scharja, 50 km east of Manturowo.

The town has a station on a stretch of the Trans -Siberian Railway.

History

The first mention of the village with the name Manturowo found in a local document from the year 1617th Even then, the place served as a river port at the Unscha, which is why many of its inhabitants had operated shipbuilding and trade. The origin of the name Manturowo comes from even earlier times, when the area was settled by a Finno-Ugric people.

A significant economic development experienced the village until the 1870s, when there regular agricultural year and weekly markets were being organized, as a transport route in turn served the river. At that time Manturowo had about 160 inhabitants.

The development towards the city began with the laying of the Trans-Siberian Railway in the early 20th century. 1906 leg of Vologda - Vyatka was commissioned and built her a station near Manturowo. This has favored the emergence and development of the timber industry. In 1917 there were in the village already four sawmills and a later major timber product factory.

After the October Revolution of 1917, Manturowo has gradually evolved towards a settlement of the workers now operated as Kombinat engineered wood plant. The city got it right with the Decree of the Presidium of the Upper Council of the RSFSR of 11 April 1958.

Manturowo is still regarded as the center of the wood processing; founded in 1915 Manturowoer wood material combine (now a joint stock company ) exports its production also abroad. In addition there are in the city, among other mechanical, chemical and food industries.
