The Mazda 818 was a car of the middle class, the Mazda in Japan from 1971 to 1978 produced. Together with the models 1000, 1500/1800 and 616 he was one of the first models that Mazda has offered in Europe. In other markets the car as the Mazda Familia ( USA, Japan) and Mazda 808 (USA, Australia, New Zealand) has been introduced. The model name Mazda Familia had been previously used for the models 800 and 1000, and he was later also adorn the 323. Since Mazda 1000 and Mazda have been 818 in some markets at the same time in the model program, the model was called 818 because of the distinction as Grand Familia.

The car was first as a 2 -door coupe and 4- door saloon ( sedan) available. He possessed in Europe the same four-cylinder OHC engine with 1586 cc and 75 hp (55 kW ) as the 616, which he was motorized at that time as well. The engine power was routed through a manual four-speed transmission with floor shift and a propeller shaft to the rear wheels.

1976 was the first model of care. The most important change for Europe was the new engine with 1272 cc and 60 hp ( 44 kW) could be ordered instead of the (initially more available ) 1.6 -liter R4 engine. Cosmetic changes were to round headlights instead of the previous rectangle headlights, minor touch-ups to the body cladding, and wheels in a new design. As an additional body version a 5 - door station wagon under the name variable was offered. The sedan with 1.3 -liter R4- engine could be ordered with an optional three -speed automatic.

From 1972 to 1977, the Mazda 818 was offered in all body styles with two -rotor Wankel engine and modified bodywork front and RX -3. This model variant was not available in all markets and have been sold in Japan, the U.S., Australia and New Zealand under the model name Savanna.

1977 accounted for the 1.6 -liter engine for the sedan in Germany. In 1978 the production was stopped and delivered in July 1979, the last Mazda 818 in Germany, so the 323 was created in 1976 now the smallest Mazda model on the German market. The 818 Coupé or RX -3 coupe received with the new Mazda RX -7 successor, the sedan was replaced by the new Mazda 626, and the combination with the new Mazda 929.
