Ménil-Vin

Menil -Vin audio? / I is a commune with 59 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Orne in Basse-Normandie region.

Geography

Menil -Vin located 21 kilometers northeast of the town of Flers. The place is located just north of the Baize. This makes the region the natural border between the departments of Orne and Calvados, the lying communities in the north are generally available to the department of Calvados. Menil -Vin is an exception. In addition to the Baize flow through two other small rivers the community. The municipal area includes the three hamlets La Vigne, canteloup and Le Moulin.

The neighboring communities of Menil - Vin Les Loges- Saulces in the north, Bazoches -au- Houlme and Menil - Hermei in the south, Les Isles- Bardel in the west and Rapilly in the northwest.

History and Culture

A fulling mill from the Middle Ages suggests that at the time sheep farming and weaving were important economic activities for the community. 1873, the community was connected to the railway network. Near the hamlet canteloup a hill was tunneled and the brook Boulaire was spanned by a bridge. The rails were removed in 1918 from Verteidungsgründen during the First World War, destroyed the bridge in 1959.

The Church

According to a legend, the village church should have been first built on a small hill. Supposedly, the stones were already set but has been removed, after which it was decided to build the church at its present position. It bears the name of Saint- Pierre. The oldest surviving parts date from the 10th or 11th century. The bell tower is composed of different rocks and has a slate roof. On the north side is a sundial.

Assignment to the Orne

The formation of the department in 1790 sparked resistance from in the Calvados region -listed town of Falaise, who saw threatened by the demarcation their influence in the communities of the department of Orne. They demanded the Orne as a border. In fact, the Baize was the border and Menil -Vin was assigned to the Canton of Bazoches -au- Houlme in Orne. Because the church lodged no objection, they remained there. 1820 called Falaise again the association of 33 municipalities Calvados.
