Mérey-Vieilley

Mérey - Vieilley is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Mérey - Vieilley is located on 284 m, about 11 km north- northeast of the city of Besançon (air line). The village is located in a slightly elevated position on the southern edge of the Talniederung Ognon, at the northern foot of the ridge of the Grande Côte below the Fort de la Dame Blanche in the extreme northwest of the Doubs.

The area of ​​3.42 km ² municipal area comprises a portion of Ognon Valley. The northern boundary runs along the Ognon as it flows with several turns by about two kilometers wide, flat Talniederung. From the river, the municipality's area extends as a narrow band to the south over the formerly marshy flood plain adjacent to the high terrace which consists of glacial river deposits. It is mainly passed with arable and meadow land. Further south, the area extends over a steep slope down to the narrow ridge of the Grande Côte. This ridge forms in geological- tectonic respects an anticline, whose northern limb is largely removed by erosion. With 600 m is reached on the ridge at the Fort de la Dame Blanche is the highest elevation of Mérey - Vieilley. A very narrow tip reaches the wooded southern slopes down ( Forêt de Chailluz ) of this ridge.

Neighboring communities of Mérey - Vieilley are Buthiers, Perrouse and Cromary in the north, Vieilley in the east, Besancon in the South and Bonnay in the West.

History

Is first mentioned Mérey - Vieilley in 1148. During the Middle Ages Mérey formed its own rule, which was under the suzerainty of the cathedral chapter of Besançon. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. Today Mérey - Vieilley part of the community association Communauté de communes du Val de la Dame Blanche.

Attractions

In the old town, many houses have been preserved in the characteristic style of the Franche -Comté from the 17th to 19th centuries. From the former seat of power are only a few remnants still visible.

Population

With 110 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Mérey - Vieilley is one of the smallest municipalities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1886 128 persons were still counted ), a population growth was recorded since the early 1980s again. Since then, the population has doubled.

Economy and infrastructure

Mérey - Vieilley was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. Even today, the inhabitants live on the merits of the activity in the first sector. Outside of the primary sector, there are few jobs in the village. Some employed persons are also commuters who engage in the surrounding larger towns of their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a secondary road, leading from Devecey after Moncey. The nearest links to the A36 motorway is located at a distance of about 12 km.
