Metepec is a municipality in the Mexican state of México. It belongs to the Zona Metropolitana del Valle de Toluca, the metropolitan region to Toluca. The municipality has 2010 214.162 inhabitants according to census, its area amounts to 67.6 km ².

The seat of the municipality is the same Pueblo Mágico Metepec.

Geography

Metepec is centrally located in the western part of the State of Mexico, a few miles southeast of Toluca de Lerdo to about 2650 m altitude. The only significant elevation in the municipality is the Cerro de Metepec.

The municipality of Metepec borders the Municipalities Toluca, San Mateo Atenco, Tianguistenco, Chapultepec, and Mexicaltzingo Calimaya.

Places in Municipio

According to INEGI survey of 2010, the municipality includes 22 villages, 9 of which have a population of more than 5,000 people. These places are - in descending order according to their population - San Salvador Tizatlalli, Metepec, San Jerónimo Chicahualco, San Francisco Coaxusco, San Jorge Pueblo Nuevo, San Bartolomé Tlaltelulco, San Gaspar Tlahuelilpan, San Miguel and Santa María Magdalena Totocuitlapilco Ocotitlán. San Salvador Tizatlalli, San Jerónimo Chicahualco, San Francisco and San Jorge Pueblo Nuevo Coaxusco were in the INEGI statistics to 2005, not as separate places but as parts of the city of Metepec.
