The National Route 12 (short- N12) is a South African national road, which begins in George on the Indian Ocean and extends over the Johannesburg metropolitan area according to Emalahleni ( Witbank ) in Mpumalanga Province.

Route

The N12 has its southern endpoint in the coastal town of George at the branch ( Kraaibosch Interchange) from the N2 to Knysna Street. It goes from there to a common route with the N9 over the Outeniqua Pass in the same mountain range towards Oudtshoorn. Previously branches from the N9 to the east. Then the road the N12 coincide with the plane of the Olifants River and crosses it in Oudtshoorn. From this location it follows the river and rises again at De Rust, where it exceeds at its highest point, the Swartberg Mountains. Then it leads to a barely populated terrain of the Great Karoo Beaufort West, directly north. On this section it also runs at altitudes above 1100 meters.

South-west of Beaufort West, the N12 combines with the inbound N1 from Cape Town, which is accompanied by a parallel railway line. In Beaufort West leads from the southeast zoom R61. In the village the R381 branches, which continues on the Rosenberg - Pass and the Molteno Pass on the edge of the Karoo National Park to the north. The common route with the N1 following branches off the N12 from this in the small town of Three Sisters off to the north. From this point, the N12 happens again low populated area crosses at Victoria West, a place with a regional airport, the R63 and up into the distant Calvinia leading railway. Continue north-northeast, again leading by sparsely populated landscapes, it exceeds the flow ongers that supplies its water to the northern Smart Syndicate Dam and decreases from south on the R398. Only 17 km then the N12 reached the city Brittown and crosses the N10 here. In Brittown there is a railway line to the more northerly mining areas in Prieska and a regional airport.

After Brittown the N12 runs almost northerly direction through barely inhabited land to the town Strydenburg and continues northeast line to Hope Town to where the regional roads R369 and R388 cross and it exceeds the Oranje. From here, the population density increases again slightly. Be accompanied by a railway line from the N12 only small towns like Belmont, Graspan, Heuningneskloof and Modder River affected. Opens shortly before the latter place in the valley of the Riet an approach leading from Koffiefontein R705. About 37 kilometers to the Modder River National road reaches the diamond town of Kimberley, where N8 and N12 cross.

From Kimberley the N12 runs almost exactly north to small towns over to Warrenton. In this place the N18 branches off the ends after Mafikeng on the border with Botswana. The N12 turns northeast, exceeds the provincial border of the Northern Cape to North West, accompanied by a railway line they reached Christiana, where they continue to follow the upper reaches of the Vaal and Bloemhof is the dam of the same approaches with its nature reserve. Further to the northeast it reaches Wolmaransstad, where the R505 crosses the R502 and R504 as well as branching, and finally Klerksdorp. Here it crosses the R30 and occurs east of Johannesburg in the region of a gold mining. After Klerksdorp and Stilfontein the N12 reached the university town of Potchefstroom (now Tlokwe ) and crosses here the R53. The R501 branches in the city northwards towards Carletonville ( Merafong City ) from.

After Potchefstroom turn of the N12 from the R54, where you can further east down to the industrial cities of Vereeniging, Sasolburg and Vanderbijlpark. However, the N12 leads directly towards Johannesburg, exceeds the provincial border from North West to Gauteng and ends in the south area of Soweto in the N1 freeway. After a short common course the N12 branches on the cross at Diepkloof to the east, where it forms the southern bypass road system of Johannesburg. She extends through a built-up area, crosses several major streets of the metropolis and takes west of Alberton leading the approaching from the south on R59. In Alberton, it swings to the north and is connected within a large junction with the N17 and N3. Just to the west of it is the large Container Terminal City Deep and directly east of it the Rand Airport. Now it forms together with the N3 Eastern Bypass, leaves the city of Johannesburg and takes south of the old Main Reef Road traffic of the approach leading from the west on M2 freeway. At the motorway junction in Germiston between the districts Morninghill and Bedfordview it branches off to the east. Shortly after turn one coming from the OR Tambo International Airport R24 and in Meadowbrook exist to and from driveways to major urban streets of Germiston. A little further east there is a motorway junction with the R21, which also connects the international airport here.

The N12 runs to the east of Johannesburg now continue through densely populated residential area. Between the towns of Benoni and Daveyton there are several connection points and at Modderfontein (eastern suburb of Benoni ) crosses the R51, so a southern cross connection to the N17 in Springs is given. Next to the east it crosses the provincial boundary of Gauteng to Mpumalanga.

According to the provincial border the N12 leads in Mpumalanga by agricultural area, touching no larger village. Junctions allow road traffic to and from close -lying towns like Delmas, Argent, Kendal, Ogies and Coalville. Here, she opens up the northern portion of a peripheral region with coal mining activities. Only in the South Eastern suburbs of Emalahleni ( Witbank ) the national road rejoins closed settlement area and ends in the east of the known to the coal mining town at its confluence with the approach leading from Pretoria or from the direction of Maputo N4. The coming of the port of Maputo in Mozambique or from Eastern Transvaal freight branches ( the N4 in South Africa) from either direction or Pretoria to Johannesburg at this point of the Trans- Kalahari Highway.

Track Removal

In its southern stretches of the road is single track and mostly expanded with attached edge strips, two lanes to Warrenton on the territory of the North West province, partly with soft shoulders. From Diepkloof, a suburb of Soweto, where it branches off from the short common route to the N1, the N12 up to its end point is a freeway with four lanes. The carriageway of the N12 is paved throughout. In Gauteng there is on the N12 road sections, which are levied on by SANRAL toll amounts.
