The Northern Dvina (Russian Северная Двина, Severnaya Dvina ) is a 744 km long stream in the north of the European part of Russia.

The Russian Severnaya Dvina name literally means " Northern Dvina ", to distinguish it from the Western Dvina.

River

The river arises in the northern Russian lowlands in Veliky Ustjug by the confluence of Jug and Sukhona, of which the latter is the larger and longer flow. From this "river wedding " flows the Northern Dvina, which is rich in fish, mainly in a north-westerly direction through a swampy, wooded and cleared out of her depression, which is sometimes more than 100 km wide and is surrounded by hills. Thus, it is becoming the biggest navigable stream in the European north-west Russia, the island is quite rich and sometimes up to 7 km wide and 15 m deep in the lower reaches. Only a little north-west of Arkhangelsk and Severodvinsk leads directly east of the Northern Dvina in a 900 -square-mile delta in the Dwinabusen, up to 70 km wide bay of the White Sea.

Catchment area and navigability

The catchment area of the Northern Dvina comprises 357,052 km ².

The river is navigable for its entire run, but frozen from December to April. It is connected via channels to other waters: A channel leads to the Volga River, which flows into the Caspian Sea and is connected to another waterway to the Black Sea. About another channel reach the ships of the Northern Dvina River on Lake Onega and Lake Ladoga to Gulf of Finland. Thus the White Sea with the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean Sea is connected. The Northern Dvina is therefore an important inland shipping route in northern Russia, especially for the transport of timber to Arkhangelsk.

The most important tributaries of the right are Vychegda, Uftjuga and Pinega, left the Waga. At the Northern Dvina in the flow direction are the cities Veliky Ustjug, Krassawino, Kotlas, Krasnoborsk, Nowodwinsk, Arkhangelsk and Severodvinsk.
