Krasnoborsk, Arkhangelsk Oblast

Krasnoborsk (Russian Красноборск ) is a Selo in Northwest Russia. It is part of the Arkhangelsk Oblast and has 4771 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ). It is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons Krasnoborsk.

Geography

Krasnoborsk is located about 428 km southeast of the Oblasthauptstadt Arkhangelsk. It is located on the left side of the Northern Dvina River just below the confluence of the River Uftjuga ( Уфтюга ) in the same. About 50 kilometers upstream is the town of Kotlas.

History

The first written record of the village dates from the 17th century. The village was at that time the name Krasny bor ( Красный бор ), which in German means Red pine forest. With the administrative reform of Katarina the Great Krasnoborsk was in 1780, the administrative center of a Ujesd ( Красноборский уезд / Krasnoborski Ujesd ). In 1796 the Krasnoborski Ujesd was dissolved and became part of the Krasnoborsk Gouvernementes Vologda. First, it became a free city administration ( Заштатный город / Saschtatny gorod ), but lost this status later. Towards the end of the tsarist era it belonged to Ujesd Solvychegodsk. Attractions

The place is famous for its handicrafts, especially wood carvings and Flechthandwerk. Krasnoborsk houses an art museum ( Красноборский историко - мемориальный и художественный музей имени С. И. Тупицына ), named after the founder of the museum, the local historian Sergei Ivanovich Tupizyn. There, in addition to traditional folk art among other exhibits of local arts and crafts are displayed.
