Podyuga

Podjuga (Russian Подюга ) is a settlement in north-west Russia. The place belongs to the Arkhangelsk Oblast and has 2626 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ). It is located in Konoschski rayon.

Geography

Podjuga is located about 380 kilometers south of the Oblasthauptstadt Arkhangelsk. The nearest towns are located 35 km west Rajonzentrum Konosha and the 65- km to the east Velsk. Due to the settlement of the same name-giving river Podjuga runs.

History

The name Podjuga Finno- Ugric origin and is derived from the words pad ( to German: Forest thicket ) and ga ( to German: water, river ) from. The present settlement Podjuga originated in the late 1920s as Lesopunkt 39 kilometers ( лесопункт 39 - й км ). The majority of the population of the time were deported kulaks, which came mainly from the southern parts of the Soviet Union, Ukraine and Belarus and were used for the most part in forestry. The settlement was first incurred barracks, later houses, a middle school and businesses. In the absence of the construction of the railway Konosha - Kotlas in the 1930s, large amounts of gravel and stones needed to set up a stone and gravel plant in Podjuga 1935. In March of 1935 the village Soviet Podjuga was established as part of the Konoschski rayon. The management of this village Soviets was, until 1940, in the nearby village Nikolajewka. In May 1959 Podjuga received the status of a working class neighborhood and the former Soviet village was ( поселковый Подюжский Совет ) in the Podjugaer Siedlungsrat converted. Today Podjuga is the administrative center of 4,661 inhabitants comprehensive rural community Podjuschskoje ( Подюжское сельское поселение ).

Economy and Transport

The main industry in Podjuga is still the forestry and timber industry. There is also a quarry.

Podjuga has a railway station and is thus connected to the railway network of the Russian Northern Railway. Originally Podjuga starting point of several railway lines, which developed mainly forest areas for forestry. Therefore, at the north of Podjuga to 2005 Kwarsongski narrow gauge railway ( Кварзеньгская узкоколейная железная дорога ) and the Pastuchowski narrow gauge railway ( Пастуховская узкоколейная железная дорога ), which formed the basis of a unified network Podjuga after their removal.
