The Novosibirsk Oblast (Russian Новосибирская область / Nowosibirskaja oblast ) is an oblast in Russia.

The oblast is situated in the south of the West Siberian lowland between the rivers Irtysh and Ob. The landscape is mostly flat, rising only in the south east of something. Many lakes lie in this area, the largest is the Tschanysee. The Russian settlement began in the late 17th century. Until the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway Novosibirsk was just a small village, but then quickly grew into a major city. With railways, airports and inland waterways, the oblast has a very good transport links. Especially in the capital there is a well developed, diverse industry.

Demography

The Russians provide the largest share of residents, there are Russian-German, Ukrainian and Tatar minorities. More than half the population lives in the city of Novosibirsk.

According to the Russian census of 2002, the population of the Oblast is composed as follows: 93.0 % Russians, 1.8% German, 1.3% Ukrainians, 1.0% Tatars, 0.4% Kazakhs, 0.3% Belarusians, 0.3% Armenian, 0.3% Azerbaijanis, 0.2% Chuvash, as well as many other ethnic groups with smaller proportions.

The Novosibirsk Oblast is divided into 30 Rajons and 5 urban districts.

As a next larger cities follow the administrative center of the oblast, the metropolis of Novosibirsk, by far Berdsk, Iskitim, Kuibyshev and Barabinsk. In total there are 14 cities in the oblast and 17 urban-type settlements.
