O'Brien County, Iowa

The O'Brien County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. In the census in 2010, the County had 14,398 inhabitants and a population density of 9.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Primghar.

Geography

The County is located in northwest Iowa, is in the north about 35 miles from Minnesota, and to the west about 50 miles from North Dakota and has an area of 1,485 square kilometers, without significant water surface. It borders the following Nachbarcountys:

History

The O'Brien County was formed on 15 January 1851 former parts of Cherokee County. However, the self- management only began on 25 January 1860. It was named for William Smith O'Brien ( 1803-1864 ), a leader of the Irish Revolution of 1848.

1856 arrived as the first settlers Hannibal H. Waterman, his wife Hannah H. Waterman and her daughter Emily O'Brien County with two ox-carts and a few household items and a little seed and settled at the Waterman Place known today. In the following years more settlers arrived and in 1860 was Hannah Waterman lessons for the first children in the county. The first school building was erected in 1869 but.
