History

The present town was developed as part of a colonization of the region in the later 16th and early 17th century. Already in 1325 there is a hill called Holesne, mentioned in 1435 as Wyrch Olessna. Olešná originated in the former area of the city Turzovka and divided from it later. As an independent community it is mentioned as Olessna for the first time in 1580; other sources give 1619 as the earliest mention. Olešná belonged to the estate of Bitsch, which was once owned by the Thurzos.
