Panorama (music competition)

The Panorama is an annual national music competition taking place by steel bands of Trinidad and Tobago.

History

The competition was first held in 1963 by the Trinidad and Tobago Steel Band Association as part of the carnival in Trinidad. Location of this event was until 2001 the Queens Park Savannah in Port of Spain. As of 2002, the first round of the competition were transferred to the Panyards the participating steel bands. Since 2006, the Final in Skinner Park takes place in San Fernando. A common Calypso will be expanded into a 10-minute arrangement with rhythm changes and variations.

In the early years was between two categories are distinguished: the Pan around the neck steel bands which their steel pans played slung on straps and the so-called conventional steel bands which hung the instruments in stand. Early 70s, the upper limit of the participating musicians per band was limited to 120 people, after groups of up to 200 players had formed.

In 2000, the steel bands were additionally divided medium band and big band into three subcategories Small Band. Their number must not exceed a maximum of 45 players, 65 and 100.

The competition is divided into three rounds, the preliminary rounds, the semi-final and the final.

Music

For the game to be Calypso is mainly simple pieces of music which. Means of intro, variations of the various steel pans a band and exchange of keys are arranged This is the task of an arranger. The musicians meet for rehearsals every evening in the Panyards. The tune is played entirely from memory in the competition.

Assessment

The musical performance is assessed in the first two rounds by five judges, in the final of 7 points judges, the highest and lowest note is deleted. The individual judges may award a maximum of 100 points, each 40 for composition and execution, and 10 points each for the sound of the band, as well as their rhythm section.

Boycott

1979, the competition was boycotted by the steel bands under the leadership of Charles Rudolph. This demanded higher premiums.
