Papal conclave, 1404

The conclave of 1404 was held after the death of Pope Boniface IX. (1389-1404) on 1 October 1404. It began on October 10. On October 17, 1404 finally Cosma Migliorati was elected as the new pope. He held office under the name of Innocent VII

Background

At the time of the conclave the Great Western Schism dominated the Church, officiated two popes at the same time: Boniface IX. in Rome and Benedict (XIII ) in Avignon. Both claimed individually, to be the legitimate head of Christendom.
