Peñamellera Baja

Peñamellera Baja ( Peñamellera Baxa ) is a municipality in the autonomous community of Asturias, in northern Spain, with its administrative seat in Panes. Bounded on the north by Llanes and Ribadedeva, in the west of Peñamellera Alta and of Eastern Cantabria.

History

Finds from the Stone Age (especially in the nearby Cuevas de La Loja ) testify to the early settlement activity. For the first time, the village was mentioned in 1032, as Vermudo III. , King of León, the places Piniolo and Aldonza with Fernando II, King of Asturias, exchanged. In 1340 the town was granted by King Alfonso XI. redivision of the area and the municipal law. In the years 1514 - 1522 the town received its own jurisdiction. 1584 was the church during a reorganization of the municipalities in the neighboring Cantabria. After the was not in agreement with the population, the then King Charles II gave the farmers a tax exemption on the cattle to keep the peace. It was not until 1833 in a further reorganization of the city fell back to Asturias.

Economy

Most important economic sector is agriculture ( with 46.52 % in 2005 ). There are particular cattle, sheep and goats bred for milk production to supply local dairies, which in part produce nationally known cheese. The second largest sector is the construction industry, which accounts for about 16 % of the business volume. In the service sector, tourism is becoming increasingly important.

Demographics

In 1930 the community numbered 4,910 inhabitants yet. Due to migration to the cities and abroad, the community lost its inhabitants. On 1 January 2013 were living here in 1331 people.
