Pete Peterson

Douglas Brian " Pete " Peterson ( born June 26, 1935 in Omaha, Nebraska) is an American politician. Between 1991 and 1997 he represented the state of Florida in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Pete Peterson attended until 1953, the Milton Public High School. Between 1954 and 1980 he was a soldier in the U.S. Air Force. He was used in the Vietnam War. In September 1966 his plane was shot down. He could save himself, but fell into a six-year captivity. In March 1973 he was released. In the following years he studied nor as Air Force member until 1976 at the University of Tampa in Florida and then to 1977 at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant. Between 1984 and 1990, Peterson taught the philosophy at Florida State University in Tallahassee.

Politically, Peterson joined the Democratic Party. In the congressional elections of 1990 he was in the second electoral district of Florida in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of James W. Grant on January 3, 1991. After two re- election he was able to complete in Congress until January 3, 1997 three legislative periods.

In 1996, Peterson decided not to re- Congress candidate. Instead, he was appointed by President Bill Clinton in Vietnam for the first official Ambassador of the United States. This post he held zwischen 1997 through 2001. In his new post he supported the search for missing the Vietnam War. After the end of his diplomatic activity Peterson founded the Global Children's Fund, The Alliance for Safe Children ( TASC ). Together with his second wife, born in Vietnam Australian Vi Lee, he founded a company that seeks to promote American trade in Southeast Asia. Since 1999, Peterson lives in Melbourne, the residence of his wife. In 2009, he applied for Australian citizenship.
