Phra Samut Chedi District

Amphoe Phra Samut Chedi ( Thai อำเภอ พระ สมุทร เจดีย์ ) is a district ( Amphoe - administrative district ) in the west of Samut Prakan province, central Thailand.

Geography

Neighbouring districts (from west clockwise ) the districts (Khet Bangkok ) Bang Khun Thian and Thung Khru, and Amphoe Phra Pradaeng and ( on the opposite bank of the Chao Phraya ) Amphoe Mueang Samut Prakan Samut Prakan province.

History

The county was founded on December 15, 1984 initially as a sub-district ( King Amphoe ) was established by five communities ( tambon) were separated from Amphoe Mueang Samut Prakan. On 15 July 1991 Phra Samut Chedi got the full Amphoe status.

Attractions

The district is named after the temple Phra Samut Chedi, which was built in 1827/1828 by King Phra Phutthaloetla Naphalai ( Rama II ) on an island in the Chao Phraya River. The landmark, the snow-white Chedi, then stood still in the middle of the river, so it was also called Phra Chedi Klang Nam ( " Chedi middle of the river "). By sedimentation it is today on the west bank.

At the mouth of the Chao Phraya River is the Chulachomklao Fort, which was built in 1893 and was only once, used during the Paknam crisis in the same year. The fort is now prepared for tourists, the park also houses the HTMS Maeklong, a former training ship of the Royal Thai Navy.

Management

Amphoe Phra Samut Chedi in five communities ( tambon) divided, in turn, in 42 villages ( Muban ) are divided.

There are two small towns ( thesaban tambon) in the district:

  • Phra Samut Chedi ( Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล พระ สมุทร เจดีย์ ) consists of the whole Tambon Pak Klong Bang Pla Kot,
  • Lae Fa Pha ( Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล แหลม ฟ้าผ่า ) consists of parts of Tambon Laem Fa Pha Nai and Khlong Bang Pla Kot.

There are also four " Tambon Administrative Organizations" (TAO, องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล - administrative organizations) in the district.
