Piet Moeskops

Pieter Daniel ( Piet ) Moeskops ( born November 13, 1893 in Geertruidenberg, † November 16, 1964 in The Hague) was a Dutch cyclist.

Piet Moeskops was a track sprinter, five times world champion was in the 1920s.

Piet Moeskops learned to ride a bike as a delivery driver for the business of his father, who was poultry dealer. In 1914 he became Dutch champion in track sprint for the first time. Immediately after the war he moved to professionals. He was regarded as particularly gifted technician and tactician.

1921 Moeskops was first world champion by beating the reigning world champion Robert Spears from Australia in the final. He could repeat this success in the following years until 1926, except in 1925 when the World Cup just took place in Amsterdam. 1929 and 1930 he was vice-champion behind the Frenchman Lucien Michard.

Due to a serious operation in 1930 to Moeskops career came to an end. In 1933, he hung his bike to the final nail and bought a cafe. As late as 1963, the 70 -year-old Dutch television a standing trial before a year later he died. In the Netherlands towns Nijmegen, Gouda and in Loosduinen, a suburb of The Hague, the streets are named after Piet Moeskops.
