Ploemel

Ploemel is a commune with 2576 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Morbihan in the Brittany region.

Geography

The municipality is located in the southwest of the department between the agglomerations of Lorient and Vannes, about five kilometers west of the town of Auray.

Ploemel bordered to the northwest and north on the community Locoal- Mendon, on the northeast by crushing, to the east by Crac'h, to the south and to the west by Carnac Erdeven.

History

From prehistoric times can be found in the municipality of several dolmens. In Celtic and Roman settlements AD follow from the 7th century the Bretons.

The place name Ploemel found from the 14th century in different spellings and is derived from the Breton word for Plu community and the name Emel.

In 1790 Ploemel is raised to the municipality and the capital of the canton, but the cantonal administrative headquarters in 1801 must submit to Belz.

The municipality maintains the small recreation park Mane Bogad.

Traffic

The D22 crosses the northern part of the municipality of Auray in the east to the west Belz. From the D22 branches in the east of the municipality from the D105, which connects the southern city Ploemel coming from Auray and to the west leads to Erdeven. The D119 forms the north -south connection from Locoal- Mendon to Carnac and crosses the D105 in place Ploemel. The D186 reached the community center of Belz from the northwest and continues towards the southeast to La Trinité- sur -Mer.

The southeastern part of the municipality clips the busy D768 from Auray to Quiberon.

Bus service ( Monday to Saturday ) exist to Auray and Belz - Lorient. The nearest train station with intercity transport connection is located in Auray, closest airport is Lorient Bretagne Sud.

Ploemel is on the railway line Auray - Quiberon, which is traveled in passenger only during the summer season under the name Tire-bouchon of the TER Bretagne. Located in the center of Ploemel station Belz - Ploemel is then in the months of July and August, all day every day served ( as of summer 2013).
