Throughout history there have been many reasons for the construction of roads. The streets
- Allowed access to food, shelter, work, education and entertainment;
- Served as routes for seasonal migrations, for pilgrimages or for trade;
- Served as an aid in attack and defense.

Road construction
The term road construction includes the design, manufacture and maintenance of roads. In the broader sense of the road is part of the transportation infrastructure making it one of the sub-areas of civil engineering. The Vasco da Gama Bridge ( German: Vasco da Gama Bridge ) is a bridge section with a cable-stayed bridge as a main opening that spans the Tagus River and Lisbon and by Highway 12 from Moscavide / Sacavém with the south-east and south cities Montijo, Alcochete Setúbal connects.
Built in 1995-1998 with 17.185 km bridge is one of the longest bridges in the world and the longest in Europe. It was named after the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama, and to commemorate the 500 years of discovery of the sea route to India in 1498.
