Rabastens-de-Bigorre

Rabastens -de- Bigorre is a commune in the Hautes -Pyrénées, in the Midi -Pyrenees. It is located in Tarbes district and is the capital of the canton Rabastens -de -Bigorre.

History

Rabastens -de- Bigorre is a Bastide and was founded on February 13, 1306 by the seneschal William of Rabastens. The Gothic church was built later, is a unique, architecturally superb specimen of their time. In July 1570, it caught the battle royal forces under Blaise de Montluc with the Protestants. 1594 Château of Rabastens -de- Bigorre was razed. To be distinguished from Rabastens in the Tarn department, Rabastens was extended by the addition of location- determining ( Rabastens -de- Bigorre ) 1962.
