Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kota Kinabalu
The Archdiocese of Kota Kinabalu (Latin: Archidioecesis Kotakinabaluensis ) is a located in Malaysia Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Kota Kinabalu.
History
Pope Innocent XII. founded the Apostolic Vicariate of Borneo on 16 January 1692nd The Mission and the attempt was unsuccessful because the Sultan of Banjarmasin forbade all foreigners to penetrate inland. Pius IX. founded the Apostolic Prefecture of Labuan and Borneo on September 4, 1855 annexations of the Apostolic Vicariate of Batavia.
On February 5, 1927, took the name, North Borneo Apostolic Prefecture on. On 14 February 1952 she was elevated to the Apostolic Vicariate and took the name, Apostolic Vicariate Jesselton on. On March 22, 1968, adopted the present name. Charged on the diocese, which was the Archdiocese of Kuching is a suffragan, it was on May 31, 1976. In the rank of Metropolitanerzbistums it was collected on 23 May 2008.
Parts of its territory it lost in favor of the establishment of the following dioceses:
- February 5, 1927 at the Prefecture Apostolic of Sarawak;
- December 17, 1992 to the Diocese of Keningau;
- July 16, 2007 to the bishopric of Sandakan.
