Roman Catholicism in Burma

The Roman Catholic Church in Myanmar comprises only a small minority of the population. The number of members is estimated at 600,000, thus 1 % of the population.

The Church in Myanmar was established by Portuguese missionaries in the 16th century. The Catholic hierarchy was established only in 1955. Myanmar is divided into three archdioceses with 11 dioceses:

The military junta impaired since the 1960s, the development of the Catholic Church. Own schools, hospitals or own press organs must not entertain the Catholic Church in Myanmar.

The Catholic Church has been significantly involved in the rebuilding after the cyclone Nargis in April / May 2008.
