Roye (Somme)

Roye is a commune with 6255 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Somme in the Picardie region; it belongs to the district Montdidier and is the administrative center of the canton of Roye.

Geography

Roye is situated in the rich plains of Santerre on the A1 100 km from Paris and Lille. It lies on the Avre, a tributary of the Somme.

History

Roye is one of the key places of historical French countryside Santerre, which was part of the Picardie later. Here died on January 21, 1330 Johanna II Countess Palatine of Burgundy, Countess of Artois and mistress of Salins in its own right, as well as her marriage to Philip V Queen of France.

The French Revolutionary and early socialist Fr Noel " Gracchus " Babeuf (1760-1797) worked as a land surveyor prior to the revolution in Roye.
