Santiago (Agusan del Norte)

Santiago is a town in the province of Agusan del Norte on the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines.

Santiago is located 45 km north of the provincial capital of Butuan City. The municipality is bordered to the west and southwest Tubay, to the south Cabadbaran, on the north by Jabonga and on the east by the province of Surigao del Sur.

The place was founded by a group of indigenous, who had fled from Jabonga. Santiago got the name of the place when he became the barrio of the municipality of Cabadbaran 1898.

1924, the place that was on the river Aciga then was destroyed by a flood, whereupon the dwellers in the Barrio Jagupit newly settled. After another flood in 1936, the inhabitants moved to the Sitio Paypay. The place was previously inhabited by ethnic Manobos and Mamanwas. In the same year was renamed the Elder Paypay was in Santiago after the Spanish name of Saint James.

Santiago was founded in 1969 an independent municipality.

To ensure the water supply of the city Cabadbaran -Santiago Watershed Forest Reserve was established on Mount Hilong Hilong.
