São Roque do Faial is a comune ( Freguesia ) on the north coast of the Portuguese island of Madeira, in a circle ( concelho ) by Santana. The municipality has an area of 15.6 km ² and 736 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011).

History

After the re- discovery of the island by João Gonçalves Zarco in 1419 began the colonization of the island of Madeira by the Portuguese. After living here settlers had already built the first church in 1551, the independent municipality of São Roque do Faial was not established until 1848, by splitting off from the parish of Faial.

Management

São Roque do Faial is the name of the municipality ( Freguesia ). The neighboring municipalities are in the north of Faial, in the east of Porto da Cruz, in the south of Monte, and to the east Curral the Freiras.
