Semyon Varlamov

Semyon Varlamov Alexandrovich (Russian Семён Александрович Варламов, English transcription: Semyon Aleksandrovich Varlamov, born 27 April 1988, in Kuibyshev, Russian SFSR ) is a Russian professional ice hockey goaltender. Since July 2011, he plays for the Colorado Avalanche in the National Hockey League.

Career

Semyon Varlamov grew up in Russia's Samara and learned there and the ice hockey game. He moved to Lokomotiv Yaroslavl and could also draw attention to himself with outstanding performances there.

NHL Entry Draft 2006 Varlamov was selected in the first round at a total of 23 position of the Washington Capitals. On 11 July 2007 the Russians signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Capitals. At the beginning of the season 2008/09 Varlamov decided for a change to North America. He came mainly to Washington's farm team Hershey Bears used. His first game in the National Hockey League goalkeeper completed the 13 December 2008 with a game of the Capitals against the Montreal Canadiens. Overall, Varlamov came on six NHL missions during the regular season. In the play-offs in 2009 he supplanted Jose Theodore as Washington's first-choice goalkeeper. The Russian completed a total of 13 play-off games, thereby pass him two shutouts.

The NHL 2009/10 season began Varlamov as the second goalkeeper behind Theodore. After a groin injury he was sent to the Hershey Bears to collect after his injury match practice. In March 2010, the Capitals brought him back in their squad. In the 2010 finals Théodore again lost his place to Varlamov and was not given a new contract. In the season 2010/11 Michal Neuvirth was presented as a goalkeeper the Capitals. Varlamov completed this season, 27 games in the regular season, but was after another groin injury behind Braden Holtby and Neuvirth only Washington's third goalkeeper.

On 1 July 2011 he was transferred to a barter for a first-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft in 2012 and a second-round vote in the 2012 Entry Draft or 2013 for Colorado Avalanche.

Due to the NHL lockout, he was active in the fall of 2012 for Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the Kontinental Hockey League.

Internationally

Semyon Varlamov represented the Russian national team for the first time at the U18 World Junior Championships in 2005 and 2006. With the U20 national team, he also took part in the U20 World Junior Championships in 2006 and 2007. In both U20 competitions Varlamov won the silver medal.

For Russia Men's National Team, he participated in the 2010 World Cup. In this tournament, the Russian team earned second place after a final defeat against the Czech team. He was also nominated for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, was however behind Evgeni Nabokov and Ilya Brysgalow only the third goalie and came to no use.
