The Sesvennagruppe is a subset of the Central Alps within the Eastern Alps. Share, the countries Austria to the Tyrol, Switzerland and the Canton of Graubünden and Italy, the province of South Tyrol.

Approximately two thirds of the sub-group are located on Swiss territory, and be designated as a Lower Engadine region - Munster or as Münstertal Alps. Only a small corner in the northeast at Nauders is located in Austria.

Boundary and adjacent mountain ranges

The name of the group, its definition as a subset of the Central Alps in the Eastern Alps and its boundary is based on the Alpine Club classification of the Eastern Alps (AVE ), which is defined by orographic criteria:

  • To the north and west of the Inn ( Lower Engadine ) forms the border from Finstermünzpass ( between sterling and Nauders ) upriver on Susch the Silvretta
  • The Inn of Susch to Zernez to the Albula Alps
  • In the southwest of the Val da Spoel, Val Ova dal Fuorn and the Munster Valley (Val Müstair ) form to the Ortler group and the Livigno Alps the limit. Both valleys are joined together by the Ofen Pass. The Munster lead the border in the south to in the Vinschgau in Glurns. The furnace pass establishes the connection with the Sesvennagruppe the Ortler Alps.
  • Between Glurns and the Finstermünzpass the Obervinschgau forms with the Reschenpass the border in the east. The Reschenpass connects the Sesvennagruppe with the Ötztal Alps.

In Switzerland, and in the Italian speaking area other organizations are common:

  • The Swiss Alpine Club (SAC ) divides the Swiss Alps part, also located in the Eastern Alps part, primarily along the cantonal borders. The Alpine parts lying in Graubünden are known as Grison Alps. These are further subdivided. The area treated here is named the Lower Engadine - Munster. It includes only the Swiss share of the Sesvennagruppe, but goes further on Swiss soil on these and also includes parts of the Ortler Alps, located on Swiss territory ( Monte Cavallaccio, pizzas delle FORCOLA / Stelvio, Umbrailpass ), as well as the Livigno Alps ( Monte Sumbraida ).
  • The Club Alpino Italiano ( CAI) divides the Alps in their officially in force in Italy on division into relatively large subgroups. The field of Sesvennagruppe then one of the Alpi Retiche ( Rhaetian Alps ). However, this is a huge group compared with the subgroups of AVE. It extends between the Splügenpass and Timmelsjoch and between the Inn Valley and the valley of the Adda.
