Siggiewi [ sɪ'dʒi ː wi ] (or Is- Siggiewi ) is a city and a municipality in the south of Malta. It lies on a plateau in the interior, a few kilometers away from the former capital of Malta, Mdina, and 10 km from the present capital Valletta. Until 2001, the motto of Siggiewi " labs et Virtute " was (Labour and Virtue).

The community Siggiewi extends to the south coast of the island.

History

In their demographic and topographic development Siggiewi followed the pattern of other Maltese villages. Before the arrival of the Knights of St John in 1530 there were only a few scattered huts in the area. Gradually the villages Xluq Hal, Hal Kbir, Hal and Hal Niklusi Qdieri went on in the town of Siggiewi and today only remember her lying deposited chapels to its former existence.

Siggiewi was founded in the 14th century. On December 30, 1797, Grand Master Ferdinand von Hompesch filed, pursuant to the request of the inhabitants - put forward by the parish priest, Don Salvatore Curso - the village to the city and named it after himself " Città Ferdinand ".

The ruins of the former parish church of St. Nicholas of Bari are still visible today. The baroque new parish church - named after the same saint - was built by the people who also mustered the necessary money in the years 1676-1693. It was designed by architect Lorenzo Gafa Maltese, but was changed over the years. The portico and the aisles were added thereto by Professor Nicola Zammit in the second half of the 19th century.

The main paintings in the church was created by the painter Mattia Preti, "Il Calabrese ", who was also responsible for the paintings in the vault of St. John 's Co-Cathedral in Valletta. The wooden statue, which is used by residents at the town fair worn ( on the last Sunday in July ) through the streets, was created in 1737 by Pietro Felici.
